- Autonomous detection and control of electric vehicle fires
What if an electric car catches fire in an underground garage or a multi-storey car park?
Firefighters can only get inside with difficulty. A conventional ceiling sprinkler system douses the whole space, but it does not have the water pressure and flow needed to put out a burning vehicle. The flames spread quickly and the damage to the parked cars and to the building structure can run into tens of millions.

If the temperature of the lithium-ion cells rises out of control, sparks appear and the fire gradually reaches the other parts of the battery. The surrounding temperature can reach 1 000 °C, twice as much as in a fire involving a combustion-engine car.
Charging is getting better, true. But a short circuit or mechanical or software damage can never be ruled out. That is why a fast and precise response is essential to prevent greater damage.

The share of hybrids and electric cars here is among the lowest in the EU. For now. Once the infrastructure is in place, we will catch up with Germany, Austria, Finland and Denmark, where batteries power 30 % of newly registered vehicles.
In Prague, Bratislava and Brno the change will come faster. The large cities in the Czech Republic and Slovakia will fill up with tens of thousands of electric vehicles that need somewhere to park and charge.

Electromobility System i-Sprink installed in multi-storey garages Technology has outpaced regulation
The rise of electromobility calls for fire safety rules for charging and parking to be set out. What will the standards be? How many parking spaces will have their own fire suppression equipment? Which solution will prevail?
The regulations and certification for suppressing li-ion battery fires are taking shape right now. We are following it closely and are glad that the direction being taken matches what the i-Sprink solution offers.
Fast fire detection and precise local suppression
- Fire control before the fire and rescue service arrives
- Early autonomous local detection with fire location indication within the building
- Connects to the existing hydrant supply without the need for a fire water tank
- Automatic disconnection of the electric vehicle charger in the event of a fire
- Suitable for use in both existing and newly built buildings
- Minimum water pressure 0.2 MPa
- Can be switched to manual fire-fighting mode using a hydrant hose
- Effective cooling of a burning electric vehicle and protection of vehicles in adjacent parking spaces

I Sprink Fire detection Why flood the whole space when only one car is on fire?
Autonomous local fire detection tells only the heads above the burning electric vehicle to release water. A sufficient volume and pressure of water cools the burning vehicle down and stops the fire from spreading. The fire brigade takes care of the rest.

I Sprink Comparison of a fire of simulated electric vehicles with and without the i-Sprink system An electric vehicle fire with and without the i-Sprink system
3 cars with combustion engines were used for the live test. Battery packs were placed under the middle car to simulate an electric vehicle and then set alight. The picture on the right shows the difference in the state of the cars after 40 minutes of fire without the i-Sprink system and with it.
